Berkshire Skills Bootcamps Impact Story: Early Years with Realise Training

May 5, 2026
This case study explores how Skills Bootcamps in Early Years, delivered by Realise, are helping individuals build confidence, gain sector‑ready skills, and progress quickly into meaningful early years careers.
Before joining the Skills Bootcamp in Early Years, Ruby was a recent Business and Management graduate navigating uncertainty about her next steps. Despite holding a degree, she felt unsure about where her career was heading and was actively seeking a role that would offer purpose, stability, and the chance to make a positive difference. While attending the Jobcentre and exploring different options, Ruby knew she wanted more than short-term employment; she was looking for a long-term career with meaning.

Why a Skills Bootcamp in Early Years?

Ruby’s interest in early years developed through her sister’s work in a primary school. Listening to her sister describe how rewarding the role could be made Ruby consider childcare as a potential pathway, even though she had no prior experience in the sector. When she discovered the Early Years Skills Bootcamp with Realise Learning, it immediately stood out. The programme offered a structured entry point into a new industry, clear training over six weeks, and a direct route into an apprenticeship, giving Ruby the confidence to take a step into an unfamiliar but promising field.

What were the highlights?

Throughout the Skills Bootcamp, Ruby experienced a clear shift in confidence and readiness for work. What began as curiosity quickly developed into genuine capability, as the programme equipped her with the knowledge and understanding needed to step into a nursery environment prepared rather than overwhelmed. The structured lessons, interactive learning activities, and consistent tutor support helped transform her awareness of early years from theory into practical understanding.

Safeguarding became one of the most impactful areas of learning. The emphasis placed on safeguarding throughout the Skills Bootcamp ensured that Ruby entered the workplace already understanding its importance, expectations, and responsibilities. Rather than needing time to adjust, she was able to engage confidently in safeguarding discussions from the outset, demonstrating awareness and professionalism well beyond what would be expected from a new starter. This foundational knowledge helped her feel trusted early on and reduced the usual uncertainty associated with joining a new sector.

The Skills Bootcamps programme also prepared Ruby for the regulatory environment of early years. Having been introduced to the kinds of questions and scenarios linked to Ofsted inspections, she entered the workplace with awareness that many new starters simply do not have. When her nursery carried out regular compliance checks and staff questioning, Ruby was able to respond accurately and calmly. Her confidence in these situations reinforced that she was progressing faster than expected and capable of handling greater responsibility.

How did Skills Bootcamps make an impact?

Shortly after completing the Skills Bootcamp, Ruby secured an Early Years apprenticeship at a local nursery and transitioned into full‑time employment. Within her first month, Ruby was offered a promotion that came with additional responsibilities, a clear indicator of her capability and progression in the role.

Looking back, Ruby describes the Skills Bootcamp as a vital stepping stone in her career journey. It bridged the gap between education and employment, transforming her from a graduate unsure of her direction into a confident early years’ professional with proven workplace readiness. The programme not only enabled Ruby to secure employment, but also accelerated her progression once in work, setting her on a clear path for long‑term career development in the early years sector.
