Across two significant events in October, the Berkshire Careers Hub brought together strategic partners, employers, education leaders and careers professionals to reflect on shared challenges, shape future priorities and strengthen collaboration across the county. From agreeing collective action through the Strategic and Operational Partnership Meeting to exploring the evolving role of Careers Leaders at the annual Careers Leader Conference, discussions focused on how education, business and support organisations can work together to ensure every young person is equipped with the knowledge, experiences and opportunities they need to succeed in education, employment and training.
From strategy to action
The month began with the Strategic and Operational Partnership (SoP) Meeting at BCA in Maidenhead, bringing together stakeholders from education, business, skills and employment to review priorities and identify areas where collective action can have the greatest impact. The following week, more than 60 Careers Leaders and careers professionals met at the CIM Business Centre in Cookham for the annual Berkshire Careers Leader Conference, exploring how those shared priorities can be translated into practice within schools, colleges and training settings.
Together, the events reinforced a common message: improving outcomes for young people requires strong partnership working across the whole careers, education and employment system.
At the SoP Meeting, partners discussed Berkshire’s changing skills and employment landscape and considered how organisations can work together to better support young people as they progress into education, training and employment. Discussions highlighted the importance of aligning activity, sharing intelligence and building on existing strengths across the county rather than creating new, disconnected initiatives.
Through collaborative workshops, attendees identified four key priorities for the year ahead:
• Strengthening employer engagement across Berkshire.
• Expanding meaningful work experience opportunities.
• Improving support for young people at risk of becoming NEET.
• Increasing collaboration across education, skills and employment partners.
The event concluded with agreement on a number of practical next steps, including developing a more coordinated employer engagement offer, exploring innovative work experience models, improving the sharing of labour market intelligence and strengthening support pathways for vulnerable young people.
Berkshire Careers Leader Conference 2026
These themes continued at the Berkshire Careers Leader Conference, where more than 60 Careers Leaders and careers professionals from across Berkshire came together for a day focused on professional development, collaboration and strengthening careers education across the county. The event brought together Careers Leaders from mainstream schools, SEND settings and alternative provision, alongside training providers and careers education specialists, creating valuable opportunities to share best practice, explore new developments in careers guidance and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing schools and colleges today.
A key theme of the conference was the increasingly strategic role of the Careers Leader. Sessions explored the latest statutory guidance and highlighted how effective careers leadership can support wider school improvement priorities, contributing to attendance, attainment, progression and positive destinations for young people. Delegates also received updates on national careers programmes and emerging developments designed to strengthen careers provision and learner outcomes, while provider insight sessions and networking opportunities enabled participants to strengthen relationships and explore pathways into further education, apprenticeships and technical learning.
The afternoon focused on careers leadership development and the Berkshire Careers Hub’s priorities for the year ahead, including excellence in careers education, career readiness and progression, meaningful workplace experiences, employer engagement and system leadership. Participants considered how schools, employers and partners can work together to improve outcomes for young people and ensure every learner is well prepared for future education, training and employment opportunities. The collaborative discussions generated valuable insights around shared challenges, innovative practice and opportunities for stronger partnership working across Berkshire, reinforcing the role that evidence-informed practice, meaningful employer engagement and collective action can play in improving young people’s life chances.
Sharon Hart, Berkshire Careers Hub, said:
It was fantastic to see so many Careers Leaders and partners coming together with a shared commitment to improving opportunities for young people across Berkshire.
There was a real energy in the room, with colleagues openly sharing ideas, challenges and effective practice. The strength of our network lies in our willingness to learn from one another and work collaboratively to ensure every young person can access high-quality careers education and meaningful pathways to their future.
The conference reinforced the importance of a strong Berkshire-wide careers community and highlighted the collective ambition to continue improving careers education, employer engagement and progression outcomes for all young people across the region.
The two events demonstrated both the strategic ambition and practical commitment that exist across Berkshire. The SoP Meeting established a shared strategic direction and agreed priorities, while the Careers Leader Conference focused on the practical leadership, knowledge-sharing and professional development needed to turn those ambitions into action. By bringing partners together to agree priorities and equipping Careers Leaders to deliver change on the ground, Berkshire Careers Hub is continuing to strengthen a coordinated approach that helps ensure every young person can access high-quality careers education, meaningful employer encounters and clear pathways to their future.
