Berkshire Skills Bootcamps Case study: Construction with ATS Group

March 11, 2026
Explore the story of a graduate of the Skills Bootcamp in Construction delivered by ATS Ltd and reflections from his employer in the construction sector.
After more than a year out of work, experienced construction professional Nick rebuilt his career through a government‑funded Construction Skills Bootcamp delivered by Associated Training Services (ATS) Ltd. Supported by his Work Coach at Newbury Job Centre, Nick joined the programme to refresh his industry tickets, gain new qualifications, and improve his prospects in the construction and electrical sectors.

Nick’s story

Nick was attending the Newbury Job Centre prior to starting his Skills Bootcamps journey but despite his experience in the sector, he had been unemployed for over 12 months and was receiving support from his Work Coach, Zoe. Zoe informed Nick about the Skills Bootcamp in construction and the opportunity of an interview with a Berkshire based construction company as a Trainee Busbar Installation Engineer on successful completion of the training.

Nick had previously held a number of tickets for the sector, some of which had expired, including, Lorry Loader, SHEA Power, MEWP Static Boom, 360-Excavator and Towing. He had 10 years site experience as a Lines Man and Fitter. Finding himself unemployed, he was keen to improve and enhance his offering and versatility by gaining additional qualifications. Nick felt that the Skills Bootcamp in construction would help him gain full-time employment in the Construction/Electrical world, gain additional skills, update his knowledge and become financially independent.

During the training, he worked methodically through each element refreshing his knowledge, sharpening his technical competence and rebuilding the set of certifications that previously allowed him to work confidently on site. The Skills Bootcamp gave him structure, momentum and access to training he might otherwise have struggled to secure. Once Nick started his new role as a Trainee Busbar Installation Engineer, the impact of the Skills Bootcamp became even clearer. Six months into his employment, Nick has already become an integral part of team.

An Employer’s Perspective

The Skills Bootcamp in construction has been a highly effective route into recruitment. It enabled us to identify motivated candidates with relevant, job-ready training without the need to engage recruitment agencies, resulting in both time and cost savings. The pre-screening and training element of the Skills Bootcamp meant we were introduced to individuals like Nick, who were already committed to returning to work and aligned with our operational needs, making the onboarding process smoother and more efficient.

Nick has been an excellent addition to the team. Six months into his employment, he is progressing extremely well and has integrated seamlessly into our workforce. He approaches his role with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn, which has had a very positive impact on both productivity and team morale. His development to date has reinforced the value of the Skills Bootcamp in construction as a route to high-quality, long-term employment.

— Local employer in the construction sector

The Slinger Signaller pathway and the courses Nick completed through the Skills Bootcamps have been directly beneficial. The training ensured Nick arrived with some of the essential skills, certifications, and safety awareness required to meet site and client requirements. This significantly reduced the need for additional training post-recruitment and allowed Nick to become productive in his role much more quickly, supporting operational delivery from an early stage.

Why complete a Skills Bootcamp in construction?

The Skills Bootcamp not only equipped Nick with up‑to‑date, job‑ready skills but also connected him with a Berkshire‑based employer seeking motivated candidates. Following successful completion, he secured a role as a Trainee Busbar Installation Engineer—quickly proving to be a valuable long‑term addition to the team. By the time his employers met Nick, he was not only ready to re-enter the sector but aligned with exactly what they needed operationally. This case study showcases how the Skills Bootcamps model strengthens local recruitment pipelines, supports employers with skilled talent, and helps individuals return to meaningful, sustainable employment.
